Depart school for a trip to Kilkenny. Kilkenny is the seat of County Kilkenny and up till the late 12th century it was the capital of the kingdom of Osraige (anglicised as Ossory). Kilkenny was first an early Christian settlement. The city is famous for its many mediaeval buildings and is referred to as the "Marble City".

Kilkenny's main attraction is Kilkenny Castle, which was the seat of the Butler family. The castle was sold to the Irish Government in the middle of the 20th century.

There are ornamental gardens on the town side of the castle and extensive land and garden to the front. Some free time to explore the city before returning to the school.
